CLARA JEANNE REED

Unmarked is a series of photographic self-portraits where my body enters into a silent communion with nature. Each image aims to anonymize, manipulate, and disguise my body in contrast with both the natural and manmade worlds. The project stems from my ongoing research in performance studies and a focus on my body as central to my understanding of social and cultural meaning. The title, Unmarked, draws from Lacanian psychoanalysis and derridean deconstruction, which interrogate the binaries within Western culture through which identities and hierarchies are constructed–such as the marked male versus the unmarked female.
